About Sodium Silicate

  • Colourless, odourless liquid.
  • Various grades are characterised by their SiO2:Na2O ratios.
  • Low ratios have alkaline properties whereas higher ratios are neutral.
  • Used as an aluminium coagulant and an iron flocculant in wastewater treatment.
  • Effective at removing heavy metals.
  • Can be used as a phosphate-free corrosion inhibitor and helps to regulate pH.
  • Produced by fusing high purity silica sand and sodium carbonate at temperatures of 1000-1500°

  • CAS No: 1344-00-9
  • Molecular formula: SiO2:Na2O
  • Molecular weight: dependent on SiO2:Na2O ratio
  • pH: dependent on SiO2:Na2O ratio
  • Density: 1.36 – 1.56 g/cm3 @ 20 °C (dependent on SiO2:Na2O ratio)
  • Solubility in water: completely miscible
  • Viscosity @ 20 °C: 100 – 600 cPs
